The Award: Commemorating the work and legacy of Virginia Ali

The 2026 Black Women in Food Award pays tribute to the legacy, leadership, and cultural impact of Black women across the food ecosystem. Each honoree receives a commemorative award plate featuring the image of legendary restaurateur and community leader Virginia Ali, whose life’s work represents resilience, entrepreneurship, hospitality, and service to community.

As co-founder of Ben's Chili Bowl located in Washington, DC, Virginia Ali helped build one of the most iconic Black-owned restaurants in the United States - a place that has served as a cultural landmark, gathering space, and symbol of Black excellence for generations. Her enduring commitment to food, community, and economic empowerment continues to inspire leaders throughout the industry.

More than recognition, the award serves as a celebration of legacy, visibility, and the powerful contributions Black women make across food, beverage, hospitality, agriculture, media, and entrepreneurship.
